Clip threads, remove pins, and press. 7. Place the postcard on the next line you will sew. In this example, it is the seamline between #1/#2 and #3. Fold the paper back on the edge of the card. Because the previous stitching extends at the end where #3 meets, you will tear it away from the foundation, and that is okay. Place the Add-A-Quarter Ruler on the fold and trim the fabric from the seamline. Place postcard, fold paper, and trim. 8. Position the #3 fabric in the same manner as you positioned the #2 fabric piece and sew on the line between #1/#2 and #3.
To trim the block, place the ½″ line on the rotary ruler on 2 adjoining sides of the square. Trim on the dashed trimming line of the foundation. The fabric will extend ½″ outside the solid sewing line. Turn the block and trim the remaining 2 sides in the same way. Trim ½″ from sewing line. Note In making blocks for cards, I have you trim them larger (½″ around the outside), so the block edges will adhere to the tape around the cutout opening in the cards. Remember when admiring your completed block that the design shown in the window of the card will be ½″ in from the edge, so it is okay if some of the fabric extends only ¼″ beyond the sewing line.
Place the Add-A- Quarter Ruler on the fold and trim the exposed fabric ¼″ from the fold using the rotary cutter. Trim. Note I use both the Add-A-Quarter and Add-An-Eighth rulers (by CM Designs) when paper piecing these blocks. When the fabric pieces are larger, use the Add-A-Quarter Ruler. When they are smaller or there are several seams merging to one area, use the Add-An-Eighth Ruler. For the example shown here, I used the Add-A-Quarter Ruler. 4. Place the #2 fabric right side up on the blank side of the paper over the #2 area, approximating the position for piece #2.
