It was the secret key to successful dancing, and Agnes approached every moment with the passion of a professional. She soon learned how much her body could hurt and how exhausting ballet could be. Most importantly, Agnes learned that no one ever sat down and rested. She learned how to rest her insteps by lying on her back and pressing her feet flat up against the wall, how to bind up her toes so they wouldn’t bleed through her ballet shoes, how to overcome exhaustion through mental toughness — and she learned never to miss daily practice, no matter what.
So mesmerized was Agnes that she was barely aware of Pavlova’s brief departures from the stage throughout the program. Something happened that day that was even more extraordinary than seeing Pavlova’s performance.
