There was also an accusation of a Jewish assassination attempt against the Prophet. Muhammad himself sent assassins to do away with enemies who were humiliating him publicly.

And large tribes sometimes broke into groups that became semi-independent or even eventually unrecognized by the tribe. Although a complex web of obligations and expectations lay within the kinship group, each extended tribal unit considered itself independent of every other and, therefore, felt no inherent obligation to those outside the tribe. Raiding the resources of unrelated or distantly related tribes was not only acceptable, but also commendable, and raiding has even been termed the “national sport” of the ancient Arabs.

As a result, when Muhammad arrived on the scene of battle, he found himself outnumbered three to one, but by the time they discovered the surprise, they were committed. To the astonishment of both the raiders and the Meccans, however, they were overwhelmingly victorious, which success was considered—by the Medinans, at least—to be the result of divine intervention that brought Muhammad tremendous prestige. To Muhammad, the Meccan Quraysh had forfeited any ties of privilege through kinship by virtue of their persecution of him and his followers.
